Hour of Code

Last week, the entire elementary school joined in on the largest learning event in history: The Hour of Code, during Computer Science Education Week (December 4-10). Every TK through 5th grade student participated in an Hour of Code activity during their science class, joining tens of millions of students in 180+ countries.
This was a week dedicated to promoting the importance of learning to code. Code is a set of instructions or rules that computers can understand and makes it possible for us to develop software, apps and websites. Students had the opportunity to complete a coding activity tailored to their experience, age, and skill level. TK students made a coding hopscotch path for their friends to follow. They had a starting block, movement blocks with arrows and other spaces where their friends had to do a certain motion including  dancing, touching their toes, or standing on one foot. We had a blast trying out each other’s coding paths! The Kindergarteners were introduced to our Beebot robots where they give the bee a set of directions and watch as the bee follows them. We made mazes for the bees to go through and even had the bees do a choreographed dance! First grade students learned how to use the app “ScratchJr” on ipads. They discovered how to code characters move and speak to each other as they designed their individual scenes. Second and Third grade students completed “hour of code” activities on the website Code.org that had them building, sequencing, and problem solving. Third grade students especially enjoyed creating their own game where they had to bounce a ball into a goal and score points! Fourth and Fifth grade students explored Code.org as well as Scratch as they solved some extra challenges I had set up for them. Our Hour of Code made the statement that TVT is ready to teach these foundational 21st-century skills. Thank you for supporting our efforts to prepare children to be successful in a changing world.
