Second Grade Shabbaton is Immersive Experience

Since Rabbi Stuart Light came to TVT five years ago, the Second Grade Shabbaton has been a 25-hour immersive Shabbat experience with a 3-month buildup during which students learn, discuss and plan for the event.

As Rabbi Light says, “The program is about excitement building up to the program, as there is a 50-day buildup to the Jewish people receiving the Torah on Shavuot.”

Second grade is a time in which many students have their first sleepover experiences. Because this one is a Jewish first, Rabbi Light goes into classrooms and teaches songs and ideas concerning Shabbat. He creates mystery questions and mystery buddies. Students get to help in planning the menu and activities. By the time the Shabbat experience happens, the students are ready and comfortable.

“It’s a methodical process so that they know me and know Shabbat,” Rabbi Light says. “The Shabbaton gives the students skill building, knowledge building and bonding at the same time.”
