TVT, Class of 2015

Duke University
Class of 2019
BS Candidate, Economics with a Finance Concentration
Q:  In what grade did you begin TVT and in what year did you graduate?
A:  I went to TVT from K-12. I was in the graduating class of 2015.

Q:  How did TVT prepare you for college?
A:  I think one of the biggest academic skills I learned from TVT is a willingness to interact with professors and classmates in discussion. Unlike some other students, I felt comfortable speaking in small group settings as soon as I stepped on campus. I think that’s primarily because of the high-quality discussions I had in so many classes during high school.

Q:  Where did you attend college and what did you study? how did courses, faculty, and experiences impact your choice of a major?
A:  I’m currently a student at Duke University. I declared my Major in Economics with a Finance Concentration. I also intend to complete a Decision Sciences Certificate. The professor of my Economics 101 Class, Connel Fullenkamp, was one of the most charismatic lecturers I’ve ever listened to, and he relieved all concern I had about economics being a dry subject.

Q:  What were your activities/internships during those years?
A:  I was elected President of Club Basketball. Club has been an awesome way for me to keep playing competitive basketball without quite the time commitment as TVT Varsity Basketball. I also work twice a week at the Duke Center for Documentary Studies, am involved with the Changeworks Entrepreneurship Competition, and am involved with Greek Life.
Last summer I worked at PAAMCO, an asset management firm in Irvine. I was fortunate enough to hear about the opportunity through the TVT network, as two Tarbut parents hold positions there. I didn’t realize just how strong the TVT network is until then; I would have never heard of PAAMCO, let alone intern there if it weren’t for Tarbut. This summer, I will be working as an Incoming Investment Banking Summer Analyst at Wells Fargo Securities.

Q:  Do you keep in touch with friends from TVT?
A:  I’m still quite close with many of my TVT friends, many of whom I’ve known since kindergarten. I get a text or Snapchat almost every day from my friends telling me what they’re up to. I’m also fortunate enough to spend a lot of time with TVT friends whenever Duke is on break. I know firsthand that this is not the case for many of my Duke friends who went to other high schools.

Q:  What TVT experiences stand out for you?
A:  Two teachers that stand out when I look back on my high school experience are
Ms. Miller and Mr. Hendrickson. I had so many conversations about life outside of school
with Ms. Miller and it showed me how much she cared about her students on a personal level.
Mr. Hendrickson’s genuine excitement about the material he taught definitely inspired me to pay attention during class. I figured if Calculus can make someone so happy, it’s probably a subject worth learning.

Q:  Any advice for today's TVT students in grades TK-12?
A:  Easily my favorite part of TVT was the people in it. Try to make genuine connections with as many students and teachers as you can. You’ll be surprised how many relationships continue well past graduation.
