Update from the MS Garden

It's time to enjoy the fruits of our labor....literally! The watermelons have been harvested from the Middle School garden. Last Friday, students ate one melon together, and donated the rest to our neighbors experiencing food insecurity.

Students chose to plant Alibaba watermelon last spring. This heirloom variety is common to Israel and the Middle East, loves hot temperatures, and is resistant to drought. These characteristics make it excellent for growing in warmer dryer conditions now common in California. Planting heirloom fruits and vegetables also preserves biodiversity in our diets!
