The college counseling process at TVT is guided by each student’s strengths, interests, and aspirations. Starting in 8th grade, college counselors begin mentoring students and providing tools to help them define themselves and their college goals. In the Upper School, counselors work with each student to develop strategies for their TVT academic journey and college search. Students can relax knowing their college counselors will be there for them every step toward their bold, vibrant futures.
Our Counseling Process
TVT’s college counseling experience centers the student—their goals, their dreams, their path. It’s a high-touch, collaborative process as expert counselors help each student define themselves and what they want from their college and future. Students are guided through the college application process, which includes helping them select TVT courses that align with their interests, preparing them for standardized tests like the SAT and ACT, and providing direction on how to apply their interests and strengths when completing applications and making decisions.
My college journey was as seamless as possible. Mr. Rastello took care of me through the whole thing, answered any questions I had, and was very supportive of my choices.

Our college counselors are available to families and students to address all of their needs. Counselors make the process collaborative, exciting, and easier for the entire family. The department helps with essay development, career brainstorming, financial planning direction, and offers general support. The reach of counseling goes beyond students to include families in the process. Through meetings and filling out questionnaires, parents and guardians ensure their thoughts about their child’s character, including their interests and values that reflect their personality, are included in the list-building stage. This includes digging into specific preferences, such as location, size, and financial requirements. This approach ensures that students enter the world with the ability to make choices based on their strengths and interests, incorporating the opinions of all stakeholders. |

Scoir is a network that supports students through their college selection process, allowing them to identify their college aspirations as well as what they are looking for in a college. Using this tool, students engage with various colleges, take introspective assessments, and learn about specific careers that align with their desires and strengths. |
| Summer Application Institute |
|
Rising seniors return to school for three days in the summer to kickstart their college applications. Our college counselors co-facilitate this program with college representatives, and, together, they act as mentors to students, working with each student as they fill out Common App applications, draft essays, and partake in mock interviews. Introducing students to the process in a detailed, interactive way before school begins sets them up for success throughout the year. |

Every year, TVT, Sage Hill School, and St. Margaret’s Episcopal School come together for a night of invaluable college application insights. Eleventh-grade students and families participate on a mock admissions committee, guided directly by college representatives who reveal what they look for in applicants’ resumes, interviews, and overall evaluations. After the case studies portion, students introduce themselves to representatives from over 80 colleges to ask questions about their school's application process. |
