Where Learning Goes Beyond the Classroom

From Lower School through Upper School, experiential learning at TVT gives students authentic opportunities to explore ideas, test their thinking, and apply knowledge in real-world contexts. Whether they are discovering nature on a field trip, building relationships during a Middle School retreat, or engaging in Upper School immersions, students learn through doing. These hands-on experiences foster independence, deepen understanding, and strengthen the confidence and curiosity that fuel meaningful academic growth.

 

Explorations Beyond the Classroom
in Lower School

Experiential learning in the Lower School brings classroom concepts to life through 28 thoughtfully designed field trip opportunities each year. Whether students are exploring local nature centers, visiting museums, or engaging with community programs, every experience is intentionally connected to academics, values, and joyful discovery.

 

My favorite day was when we went to the aquarium. I learned things about ocean animals that I never knew, and it felt like I was actually a scientist exploring the ocean.

Current Lower School Student

Mission San Juan Capistrano Cultural Study

Fourth graders connect deeply with California history as they explore the mission’s grounds, gardens, and exhibits. The visit brings their social studies unit to life, helping students understand the stories, cultures, and influences that shaped our state.

Tanaka Farms Agricultural Study

Kindergarteners experience plant life cycles firsthand as they tour the fields, harvest produce, and learn about sustainable farming. This trip nurtures early environmental awareness and helps students understand where food comes from through joyful, hands-on discovery.

Segerstrom Center Arts Immersion

First graders experience the magic of live performance as they attend music, dance, or theater productions at the Segerstrom Center for the Arts. These arts-rich moments ignite imagination and support early learning in storytelling, rhythm, and expression.

Pali Institute Outdoor Education

Fifth graders engage in outdoor science, hiking, and team-building activities designed to introduce key ecological concepts and build independence. This multi-day experience strengthens collaboration, confidence, and an appreciation for the natural world.

OCC Planetarium Exploration

Third graders step into the world of astronomy as they observe stars, planets, and constellations up close. The immersive environment sparks curiosity and strengthens scientific thinking as students connect celestial concepts to their classroom learning.

Heritage Museum History Walk

Second graders explore local history by touring a preserved Victorian-era home filled with artifacts and stories from the past. The visit deepens their understanding of community life, cultural change, and historical perspective.

Discovery and Collaboration
in Middle School

Experiential learning in Middle School begins with a division-wide retreat where students build connections, practice collaboration, and engage in hands-on activities that set the tone for a year of academic growth. These retreats blend community building with problem-solving, challenge-based tasks, and reflective experiences that strengthen student confidence and independence.

 

The retreat helped me get to know everyone better. We had to work together on challenges, and it made me feel ready for the year and excited to learn new things.

Current Middle School Student

Washington, D.C. & Pennsylvania History Intensive

Through a four-night East Coast journey, 8th graders step into pivotal moments of American history by visiting national monuments, museums, and memorials. Guided reflection and conversation help students examine leadership, civic responsibility, and their role in shaping the future.

Harvest Solutions Farm Volunteer Day

During their service-focused week, 7th graders work together at Harvest Solutions Farm, harvesting produce for local food banks. The experience connects environmental science with real-world impact while reinforcing cooperation and responsibility.

Catalina Island Marine Science Expedition

On a three-day immersive trip, 7th graders explore marine biology and ecology through snorkeling, kayaking, and field research. This program builds scientific inquiry skills while encouraging curiosity, resilience, and trust among classmates.

Service Learning & Food Insecurity Project

As part of their experiential learning week, 7th graders study food insecurity by shopping for families in need, delivering goods to a local pantry, and learning how community systems support vulnerable populations. This hands-on project deepens empathy and civic understanding.

 

Camp Alonim Retreat

At the start of Middle School, 6th graders unplug, build friendships, and challenge themselves through outdoor activities and team-building experiences. This retreat strengthens confidence, collaboration, and a sense of community that carries into the academic year.

A Fully Immersive Experience
in Upper School

Immersions give Upper School students the opportunity to grow and explore outside of the classroom and live out our value of tikkun olam. Toward the end of each school year, students embark on a journey that delves into learning through exciting experiences in topics that range from Finance & Investment to a Costa Rica field study. Immersions always connect to serving our communities and underline the importance of showing up for each other, both at TVT and in our wider world.

 

My Immersions experience helped me understand how interconnected we truly are. Instead of reading about history and traditions in textbooks, I wandered through ancient temples and world-class museums and tasted authentic cuisine around Orange County.

Costa Rica Field Study Immersion

Costa Rica Field Study

Students travel to Costa Rica and study the history and ecological value of the region, then they get to work removing invasive species and exploring the wonderful habitat.

Biomedical Research Immersion

Biomedical Research 

In partnership with UCI Medical Center, students learn how science and research improve and advance healthcare. They spend the week in a medical school training lab extracting DNA; testing and analyzing how exercise contributes to heart rate; and learning how to perform a biopsy, laparoscopic surgery, and suture.

Students engage with world cultures—exploring the breathtaking historical sites, museums, and temples, and delicious food in Orange County and Los Angeles. 

Upper School Students CS Trip

Charity Begins at Home

In this immersion experience, students engage in meaningful acts of service each day: helping local organizations, supporting community needs, and discovering how small actions can make a big difference close to home. 

 

We’re not just taking them on trips. We’re creating cultural anthropologists who learn to observe, appreciate, and engage with diverse perspectives.
