TVT Celebrates Hanukkah

Every student on the TVT campus enjoyed fun and age-appropriate Hanukkah activities this week. Rabbi Stuart Light, TVT’s Director of Jewish Studies, created an engaging lineup of events, games and celebrations.

All Lower and Middle School students peeled their own potatoes, grated and mixed their own latke ingredients and fried their own latkes. Lower School and Middle School each had separate Hanukkah parties.

From 3 to 3:15 p.m. each day, the Lower School held an official candle lighting and Hanukkah sing down. The 1st grade and Lower School choir headed out into the community to spread some Hanukkah cheer to Orange County.

The Middle School began each day of Hanukkah with a candle lighting and words of inspiration about Hanukkah. Additionally, Middle School had a dreidel event that mirrored "March Madness" -- "Kislev Craziness." There was a bracket, and each student competed to become the Middle School winner.

While Upper School had finals, students had an opportunity during test breaks to play dreidel and make latkes as well. They got caught up in all the fun around campus.

There were 11 creative booths that sought to strike the balance between Hanukkah fun and teaching important Hanukkah principles. They were: Hanukkah shooting gallery, where students aim at Hanukkah symbols on the wall and win prizes, Hillel vs Shammai Sumo Wrestling where students learn the differences in approach of these two Jewish scholars, “I Have a Little Dreidel” rhyming game, “Get Rid of the Unkosherness of the Hanukkiah” in which there is an error in the Hanukkiah, “Maalin b’Kodesh” about each day of Hanukkah going up in holiness, “Good ol’ Dreidel” with jelly beans as prizes, Human Sized Hanukkah Board Game, The Great Miracle, Hanukkah Maze, Fishing for Doughnuts, and Hanukkah Musical Chairs.
